Where is it safe for me to be? Not a question I consciously asked as a child, but one my environment posed again and again. Durchdringend is an audiovisual rumination on the place I found to be safe — my father’s basement forge. Surrounded by heat, sharp edges, and deafening noise, this unlikely space became refuge — not because it was gentle, but because it was familiar.

Adaptive environments are often shaped by repetition and sensory memory. Places others might find harsh or unwelcoming can feel deeply secure when they echo the contours of our lived experience.
Durchdringend explores this paradox, inviting the viewer into a sensory environment that is at once protective and unsettling. It is a personal homage to our adaptive capacity — the resilience embedded in our bodies and minds — and the complex ways we learn to survive.
